The Project for Capacity Development on Natural Disaster Resistant Techniques of Construction and Retrofitting for Public Buildings in the Republic of Bangladesh

Summary

Introduction

In response to the request of BD government, Japan has sent an expert team consisting of 8 members to execute this technical assistance project with the following purpose and goal. The team will work together with the PWD engineers and train them using various tools such as lectures, one to one discussions, filed works to master the retrofitting technology. It should be mentioned that the retrofitting technology has not been taken seriously in Bangladesh before. Japan has come forward to help BD in this area because BD is an EQ prone country and needs to prepare to minimize the damage in the event of any EQ. The project will continue for four years with definite work plan for each year.

Purpose

To develop the capacity of PWD engineers regarding construction and retrofitting technology

Safety of the buildings is enhanced so that the response activities after disaster events are smoothly conducted

1. Preparation of a Building Inventory

2.Lectures / training for the PWD engineers throughout project period

3.Carrying out a vulnerability assessment

4.Development of new construction method

5.Development of an appropriate method for retrofitting

7.Establishment of a good system for quality assurance

8.Preparation of design manuals for new construction and retrofitting methods

9.Preparation of a road map for retrofitting works

10.Seminars for better understanding of the contents, sharing of outcome among national and international experts
